The #oldmedina was built on the site of #anfa. The name has been mentioned throughout history under many different versions Anfa, Anafe, Anif, Nafe a Bener word meaning hill or cliff. During the Middle Ages the fine Merino wool and the wheat from #Anafil were renowned. In 1468 the Portugese occupied #anfa yet allowed it to be pillaged. Leon L'Africain wrote about the ruined state of the city in the 16th century. In 1770 the well structured administration of the Alouite Sultan Sidi Mohamed Bem Abdellah rebuilt the town and re- populated it with tribes drawn from all over #morocco Since that time the town has been known as #darbeida = #casablanca (at Old Medina)
